He felt as though he could run a marathon. John, already dressed in his running gear, practically vibrated as he laced up his shoes, his breath coming in quick, shallow bursts. He had a long day of hiking planned, the promise of nature filling him with anticipatory pleasure.

His roommate, David, emerged from his room, rubbing sleep from his eyes. "You're seriously considering a snake?" he asked, his voice thick with disbelief. "A snake, John? In this apartment?"

John chuckled, the sound bright and full. "Imagine it, David! The sleekness, the mystique! A reptile that could share our space. A silent watcher. It'll be so cool, so *intriguing*!"
