"Top of the morning!" Amelia chirped, her voice resonating with an uncharacteristic volume, as she practically skipped into her cubicle. Today was the day she would present her findings. Everything felt so alive, so possible.

The conference room felt suddenly oppressive. Her heart hammered against her ribs as Mr. Davies delivered the bombshell. It felt as if someone had just pulled the plug; all the electric current in the room, gone.

Amelia’s shoulders slumped, her carefully prepared notes suddenly looking like nothing more than flimsy, meaningless paper. The optimism that had buoyed her all morning evaporated, leaving behind a cold, hollow shell.
