The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. Sarah coughed, pulling the string that lit the single bulb, illuminating a jumble of forgotten treasures. She wasn’t searching for anything specific, just a reason to escape the confines of her overly tidy apartment. That’s when she saw the weathered wooden box tucked away in a corner. Inside, nestled amongst old photographs and letters, was a worn leather journal.

Her mother’s handwriting, neat and familiar, filled the pages. The first entry was titled, “Before I Go… Things I Must Do.” A thrill, like static electricity, ran up her spine. Sarah grinned, a genuine, wide expression that reached her eyes.

She read, “Learn to surf.” Right then, a sudden impulse took hold. She slammed the box shut, grabbed her keys and sprinted for the beach, feeling the wind whip through her hair. The salt spray, the crash of the waves – everything felt new, exciting.
