He’d practically floated through the campus that morning, anticipating the results. Noah felt so alive, so ready to conquer the world. He envisioned a career in politics, and this class was the first step. He was going to impress them all.

The midterm results were posted, and his name was near the bottom. His world tilted. He reread the grade, the numbers mocking him. He sank onto a bench.

The day had lost its luster. He felt as though the oxygen had been sucked out of the air. His earlier optimism evaporated, replaced by a cold dread.
