He’d always been a seeker. Now, my brother, Daniel, was now an adherent of Wicca. My mother, a woman who prized stability, seemed to shrink slightly with each passing day.

I began to pay close attention to every detail in his life. I scrutinized his bookshelf, his internet history. I spent hours online, researching Wicca, looking for something, anything, that I could use.

The change in him felt like a personal affront. Everything, from the new crystals on his desk to the incense that now filled his apartment, seemed to taunt me. I started visiting his apartment unannounced.
