The first nail gun burst echoed through the pre-dawn quiet. Sarah sat bolt upright in bed, heart thrumming. She swung her legs over the side, the familiar creak of the floorboards a sound she usually welcomed, now felt like a warning.

She padded to the window, peering through the blinds. Mr. Henderson’s house was still shrouded in shadow, but the rhythmic hammering had already begun. She squinted, straining to see any movement.
