The harsh fluorescent lights of the pawn shop seemed to intensify the dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah’s gaze darted around, assessing every shadow, every glint of metal. Her breath hitched as a small, velvet box caught her eye. It was nestled amongst a collection of tarnished watches and chipped porcelain dolls. Her hands, balled into fists, twitched with a nervous energy.

She approached the counter slowly, deliberately. The shop owner, a man with a perpetually bored expression, barely glanced up. “Can I help you, miss?” he drawled.

“Just… browsing,” Sarah replied, her voice sounding a little too loud in the quiet space. She kept her eyes on the box. She needed to see it, confirm her suspicions.

The box contained a ring, a sapphire encircled by tiny diamonds. Her grandmother's ring. A tightness formed in her chest. She had to get it back. She’d do whatever it took.
