Gemotions

The letter lay on the kitchen counter, its crispness mocking her. She picked it up, her hand trembling. Denial. Her breathing quickened, shallow and rapid. Her eyes scanned the small space of her kitchen, taking in every object, every corner.

She took a long sip of water from her cup. She heard the creak of the front door. Her hand instantly went to her pocket. Who was it? She approached the door and peered through the peephole. It was just the mailman.

Back in her room, she closed her blinds. She felt safer with the world shut out. Then, she unlocked the window, just a crack, so she could hear anything that might happen.
