The silence of the house pressed in on Emily, a heavy blanket. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway seemed amplified, a constant, unsettling reminder of the passage of time. She'd walked through the house, checking every room, every corner, every shadow. Her heart raced, each breath shallow and quick.

She sat on her old bed, running her hand along the quilt. The feeling was a strange mixture of nostalgia and dread. She saw her mother in the doorway. "Are you getting settled in, dear?" Her mother's face was creased with worry, her voice gentle.

Emily nodded. "Yeah," she replied, but the word felt like a lie. Every fiber of her being felt keyed up, ready. She was surrounded by the familiar, but it didn't feel safe.
