He walked the grounds of the house, a slow, methodical circuit, his eyes darting back and forth. The setting sun cast long shadows, distorting the familiar landscape. Every rustle of leaves, every chirp of a bird, made him jump.

He went inside, checking every window, every door. He had to be sure, absolutely sure, that the house was safe. He felt a constant pull, a need to protect. He heard his father’s voice calling him.

He walked into the living room, but he didn't relax. Every detail registered. The familiar furniture, the portraits. He took a seat on the couch, but even then, his posture was tense.
