She didn’t sleep well the night before. She'd tossed and turned, replaying every conversation she'd ever had with her boss, wondering if her performance was truly adequate. Now, this… this intrusion. The new recruit, a young woman named Emily, was going to shadow her for a week.

He didn't bother to sit down. He took her through each step of the daily routine, speaking in short, rapid-fire sentences. He wanted to get it over with. He wanted to get back to his own work, his own space, his own routine.

He made sure to emphasize the trickiest aspects of the job. He went into minute detail about the most obscure regulations, pointing out loopholes and suggesting alternative approaches – some of which were only *technically* legal.

He watched her carefully, his eyes never leaving her face. As she spoke, he interrupted, offering clarifications, adding details, always making certain she knew he was in charge. He was very interested in her understanding of things.
