The champagne flute felt slick in Amelia's hand. She scanned the ballroom, her eyes darting across the clusters of guests, assessing each one. Was that *him* by the bar? The angle was bad, the back of a suit, but the build… Her breath hitched. She took a deliberate sip, the bubbles tickling her nose, a temporary distraction.

"Lovely, isn't it?" Her friend, Sarah, beamed beside her. Amelia forced a smile. "Absolutely. Just... trying to get a good look at the cake." She lied, hoping the lie didn't show in her voice.

She felt a prickling heat across her skin. The music, previously a pleasant background noise, now felt too loud, too intrusive. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the glass. She wouldn't let him ruin this, not tonight.
