The chatter of the other guests sounded distant, distorted, like a muffled roar. He stood near the bar, feigning interest in a conversation about sports. His focus was elsewhere. He kept his neck stiff, his eyes rapidly scanning the room.

He'd rehearsed every possible scenario. He had a plan, a strategy. He would be cordial, polite. He would be composed. He was ready.

He saw her across the room, by the cake table. She seemed to be looking in his direction. He felt a jolt of electricity run down his spine. He took a deep breath and straightened his tie.
