The silence of the house amplified every sound, every movement. When the phone vibrated on the kitchen counter, my heart leaped. He wasn't home. I looked at the screen, a stranger’s number. I was instantly drawn to it. I looked at the phone. Its presence seemed to taunt me.

My fingers hovered over the call log, the history button. I stared at the phone. It was impossible. I knew it. He would never do this. He had to be faithful. I had to know. The metallic scent of blood seemed to fill my nostrils. I pushed the button.
