The sunlight sliced through the dusty windows of the spare bedroom, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah cautiously opened the first box. Her mother’s name was scrawled on the masking tape: “Sarah’s School Days.” Inside, the contents were meticulously arranged. Math quizzes, book reports, science experiments, all preserved. She took a deep breath, trying to ease the tightness in her chest.

She flipped through a particularly messy art project, the paint smeared and cracking. A faint smile touched her lips, but it quickly faded. Why this obsession with saving everything? She felt exposed, as if her entire life had been laid bare for an unseen audience. She re-examined the layout of the room, her eyes darting from the window to the door.
