The fluorescent lights of the hospital corridor hummed, a sound that grated on Amelia's nerves. She clutched the manila envelope containing the supposed results of her recent colonoscopy. Her stomach churned, not from the procedure, but from the unsettling feeling that had been gnawing at her since the receptionist's careless tone on the phone. "There's been a mix-up," she'd said. "We're looking into it." Amelia re-read the report. A diagnosis of Stage 3 bowel cancer. The name at the top wasn't hers.

Her knuckles were white around the envelope. She paced the waiting room, ignoring the bored stares of other patients. Each cough, each sniffle, seemed to her a potential threat, a sign of some unseen, spreading illness that might be her own. She considered confronting the doctor again, but the thought made her hands tremble. Instead, she took a seat, her gaze darting from face to face.

The air felt thick, heavy with unspoken anxieties. She'd need to examine every detail. Every test. Every statement. She was the only one who could truly protect herself now.
