The sterile white walls of the medical ward closed in around her. The new department felt cold and clinical. The sudden transfer had been unexplained. She kept her eyes glued to the monitors, her ears pricked for anything out of place.

She rechecked the medication schedule, verifying the dosages, the timings, the patients' charts. She observed the nurses, watching their interactions, listening to their conversations, noting their behaviors. She needed to understand.

She ate lunch in the staff room, but did not eat. Her gaze lingered on the exit doors, and she remained alert. She knew there were problems here, and she had to find them. Every breath was a risk, and it was hard.
