Michael checked his email. A friend request from “Brenda Miller” blinked back at him. His stomach churned. He remembered the constant taunts, the whispered insults. He slammed his laptop shut.

He stood and walked to the window, peering outside. The street was quiet, the houses serene, but inside, a knot of unease twisted in his gut. His hands instinctively clenched into fists. He thought of all the times he'd been caught off guard, the times he'd been hurt. He would not be caught off guard again.
