The invitation sat heavy in Leo’s pocket, crinkled from his repeated checks. He'd circled the date in red marker on his kitchen calendar; his best friend's birthday was today. He was ready. This afternoon, he would stroll over to Maya's apartment, feigning casualness, then surprise! A room full of friends, a cake, the works. Hours ago, a text arrived from their mutual friend, Sarah. “Party’s off. Maya found out.” Leo reread the message, his jaw tight. He hadn't responded. He would not allow a single detail to be missed. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples.
