Gemotions

The dust swirled around him, each particle illuminated by the beam of his flashlight. He paused at the foot of the stairs, taking a deep, steadying breath. He would get this under control. He had to. He’d learned his lessons.

He began his search with methodical efficiency. He checked every corner, every shadow, every hidden space. He found a hidden compartment beneath a loose floorboard. His heart rate quickened.

Inside, he found a collection of small, intricately carved wooden figures. Each one was unique, and each one seemed to stare at him. He felt an inexplicable sense of dread, a feeling that something wasn't right. He closed the compartment, and promised himself he'd sort out these possessions later. He was the one in charge now.
