She held the card up to the light, squinting. It was a mass-produced piece of stationery, the ink of the greeting slightly smeared. Her pulse quickened. Who? And why?

The mail had been delivered a little earlier than usual. A small detail, perhaps, but it made her uneasy. She scanned the neighborhood, her eyes darting from house to house. The usual collection of parked cars, the swaying trees – everything seemed innocent, yet…

She moved through her apartment, checking each room, each closet. The floorboards creaked beneath her weight. She pulled the blinds closed, plunging the living room into shadow. A low growl escaped her lips.
