The card was tucked between a credit card offer and a coupon for pizza. It was a child's drawing, a lopsided cake and a messy "Happy Birthday!" written in crayon. His breath hitched.

He moved away from the mailbox, scanning the street. The houses were neat and ordinary, the lawns perfectly manicured. He felt his jaw clench. He kept his hands in his pockets.
