The antique key felt cold in Amelia’s hand as she unlocked the front door. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the gloom. She scanned the hallway, every shadow, every corner. Her hand instinctively tightened on the key, knuckles white.

"Hello?" she called out, her voice barely a whisper. Silence answered. A spiderweb, undisturbed for who knew how long, shimmered above a grandfather clock. Amelia advanced slowly, her senses heightened, every creak of the floorboards a potential threat.

She felt a prickle at the back of her neck, a sensation of being watched. Her gaze darted from the portraits lining the wall, their painted eyes seeming to follow her. The air hung thick, heavy with the scent of mothballs and forgotten memories. This house, their grandmother’s house, held secrets, she was sure of it.
