"You have to go," her sister had pleaded. "It’ll be fun." The word “fun” felt like a slap in the face. Anna carefully tore the invitation into tiny pieces, then carefully gathered them and burned them in the fireplace. She felt a familiar rush of adrenaline as she watched the flames.

Later, she paced the length of her apartment, restless. The walls seemed to be closing in. She felt a growing paranoia. She could hear whispers, imagined voices, and felt like she was being watched.

She grabbed her keys and left. She drove for hours, further and further away, until the city lights were just a distant glow.
