He double-checked the locks, the windows, the alarm system. It had been ten days since the email, ten days of restlessness. The knowledge of her adoption was a weight, pressing down on him. He found himself avoiding his parents, his mind filled with questions, suspicions. He'd started sleeping with a flashlight and a heavy wrench under his bed. His partner, noticing the change, tried to talk to him. He just shrugged it off, excusing it with "work stress". But work wasn't the reason.
