Gemotions

The envelope, thick with the weight of the appraisal, lay unopened on the kitchen counter. Sarah paced, the linoleum cold beneath her bare feet. Her uncle, usually a jovial man, had been unusually quiet since announcing his decision to sell the family silver tea set.

She remembered the tea set from her childhood, gleaming silver, always polished to perfection. Her grandmother had used it for every special occasion. The thought of it gone, in someone else's hands, felt like a physical wound. She checked the windows were locked and secured for a sixth time.

She picked up the phone, her hand trembling. She had to do something, anything. Even if it meant confronting her uncle head-on, or, god forbid, getting herself into financial trouble.
