The key, cold and metallic against his palm, was the only thing that felt real. John had been spending all day inside the old house, one final time. He was pacing the empty rooms, touching the walls and floorboards, absorbing the memories.

He'd made sure the windows and doors were securely locked. He wanted to be sure that he had spent his last moments in peace. He wanted to preserve it for himself.

He knew they were coming soon. A deep tremor ran through him. He checked the locks one more time. He was ready for them.
