The city noise was a dull roar that seemed to amplify the silence in his cramped apartment. His heart hammered a frantic rhythm against his ribs. He couldn’t sit still. He rose and went to the window, the window overlooking the street. He gripped the sill, knuckles white. The people passing by seemed oblivious, but he saw them as rivals, as potential thieves.

He rubbed his temples, trying to ease the pressure building behind his eyes. He must proceed with extreme caution. He wouldn't let his dream be snatched away again. He would not be caught off guard.

He spun away from the window, and towards the meticulously organized papers on his desk. Each document was a shield, a safeguard. He started to meticulously review them.
