The setting sun cast long shadows across the empty field. Coach Peterson stood at the edge of the pitch, his hands stuffed deep in his pockets. He saw David approaching, his face lit up with a grin. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He was the one.

He forced a smile. "David, good to see you." He tried to sound casual. He failed.

David stopped a few feet away, his expression shifting. He was picking up on the vibes. "Coach?"

Peterson turned away, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon. He took a deep breath. "David, this is not easy." The words felt heavy on his tongue.

He saw the look of understanding and resignation on David’s face. He turned back, his smile faltering. He closed his eyes.
