The news hit her like a physical blow. Emily had treasured the novels of Thomas Sterling, finding solace and understanding in his characters and stories. Learning that his work was cobbled together from countless other sources left her feeling empty and betrayed. She couldn't believe it.

She retreated. She locked herself in her apartment, the shades drawn against the day. She went into her own attic and brought out her typewriter. She started typing, hammering out her feelings and thoughts. She spent all day and night at it, her fingers raw, her mind racing.

She went to sleep eventually, but dreamed of Sterling and his victim's faces. She had to make them see the truth.
