“A goldfish?” Brian had scoffed. “Absolutely not.” But now, he felt as if his apartment were under siege. His brow was furrowed, his body tense.

He circled the living room, a hawk circling its prey. He scrutinised every corner, every piece of furniture, searching for a clue. The water bill felt suspiciously low this month.

He pressed his ear against the bedroom door, listening for any telltale bubbling sounds. Nothing.

His roommate, Kevin, emerged from the room, whistling. His hands were behind his back. Brian's pulse raced.

"Just admiring the view," Kevin said, his voice cheerful. Brian remained frozen, his eyes narrowed.
