The doorbell chimed, a cheerful sound that felt like a challenge. Amelia peered through the peephole. It was just the pizza delivery guy. She took the pizza, but kept the chain locked.

Her own party was starting in an hour. She glanced at the calendar; her best friend, Chloe, was hosting her own celebration the same night. Amelia felt a tightening in her chest.

She placed the pizza on the counter, but she did not want to eat, she felt sick. A strange sensation, a twitch in her eye, made her feel as though she was being studied. She picked up her phone and texted Chloe: "See you later, hope all's well!"
