The city noise, usually a comforting backdrop, now seemed to press in on him, a chorus of unwanted sounds. David stood at the window, watching the street below. He checked the locks, then again. His friend, Kevin, was also hosting a party, the same night.

His hand reached for the pepper spray in his pocket, a familiar weight. He was scheduled to meet Kevin there. He felt the blood rush to his face, a sudden wave of heat.
