He sat in his car, parked across the street from her apartment. The streetlights cast an eerie glow on the wet pavement. He checked his watch for the tenth time in as many minutes. He'd spent days, weeks, pouring over his memories, and it was devastating to discover she didn’t remember anything.

He'd rehearsed it all, the perfect moment, the perfect words. But when he finally saw her, finally approached her, she'd simply looked at him with polite indifference. It was all a lie.

He knew she would be alone now. He knew she had to be safe. He took a deep breath, and started the car. He had to know if she was safe. He had to be close, for her. He would be nearby, watching, waiting, until he knew she was alright.
