The elevator ascended, the elevator music a generic, forgettable tune. Then the familiar piano chords of her song. Amelia's breath caught in her throat. Her heart thrummed an unsteady rhythm against her ribs.

She felt a prickly heat rise on the back of her neck. The other passengers in the elevator became indistinct, blurred figures. She fixated on the small speaker in the corner, straining to hear every note, every word.

The doors opened on her floor. She didn't move immediately. Her hand clenched on the rail. As people began to exit, she lingered a moment, then cautiously stepped outside. She glanced back at the elevator, the anticipation making her pulse race.
