The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows across the room, mimicking the unsettled feeling churning in Leo’s stomach. His mother had spun tales of a heroic lineage, of ancestors who’d overcome adversity with unwavering integrity. But the photographs…they told a different story.

He held up a picture of his great-great-grandmother, her face a mask of determination, standing next to a train. But she wasn't wearing the homespun clothes that her stories had talked about. She was dressed like a wealthy businesswoman. He felt a sting, a sudden burst of anger.

He found another picture. His great-grandfather, in uniform, with a swastika on his arm. His breath hitched in his throat. This could not be. This had to be an error. He needed to be sure.
