The flickering streetlight cast long, dancing shadows across the alley as Liam double-checked the lock on his back door. He’d been jumpy all day, ever since that suspicious van had idled outside his building. His thumb hovered over the send button, ready to dispatch a message to Sarah about the grocery list. He squinted at the contact name: "Mom." That wasn't right. His heart hammered against his ribs. He deleted the pre-typed message about milk and eggs, replaced it with a terse “Who is this?”
