He picked up the guitar, his fingers still aching from years of practice. His daughter, Chloe, watched him with a detached interest. He remembered the feeling of excitement, of inspiration. Now, she spoke of recording contracts, of world tours, of “making it big.” He sat, the guitar felt heavy in his hands. Every chord he played was scrutinized by her sharp, critical eyes. He felt a rising tide of unease. He thought about her future, and his responsibility for it. He needed to be sure that she was safe.
