The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the office, highlighting dust motes dancing in the air. John kept his back against the wall, surveying the room. He felt the familiar prickle of discomfort as he saw Laura chatting with a group of colleagues near the water cooler. He didn’t trust her.

He knew she was trying to get close. He could feel her gaze on him.

"You look tense, John," she said, approaching him. Her tone was friendly, almost too friendly.

He forced a weak smile. "Just a long day."

"Remember that time we went to Camp Clearwater?" she continued. Her voice was too casual. He felt a sudden coldness seep into his bones, and felt the need to retreat.
