He pulled over to the side of the road, the engine of his car still humming. It was after midnight. The news of Ava's move had stolen his sleep. He felt as if he was missing something. The headlights of passing cars sliced through the darkness, each one a phantom threat.

He needed to see her. He had to know the truth. He started the car again, making his way toward her house, driving slowly, as if he expected a ambush. He replayed their last conversation in his mind, searching for clues, for anything he might have missed.
