The photograph of the house, bathed in late-afternoon sunlight, was an unexpected blow. A wave of both anger and sadness washed over her. She knew the house, every nook and cranny. Now, it was for sale.

She decided to start with the real estate agent, calling the office and making inquiries. She feigned curiosity about the property, her voice carefully neutral. She needed to assess the agent, determine his motives, and understand his true intentions.

She then opened her laptop and began researching local ordinances, zoning regulations, and any potential development plans in the area. She spent the entire day gathering information, a strange sense of alertness clinging to her.
