He stared at the paperwork, the official pronouncements of a shared parentage. Liam felt a cold, hard knot form in his gut. His life had been tidy, predictable. This new information felt like a crack in the foundation. It was an instability he was unfamiliar with.

He changed his route to work, avoiding the usual streets. He avoided contact with the people he worked with, and didn't speak about it with anyone. He started parking his car further away from his front door. Every shadow, every sound, seemed amplified.

He decided he would go to the police and let them know about the matter. He needed a record, he told himself. He wanted to feel that someone knew what was happening. He felt completely on his own.
