He’d almost turned back at the door. He’d stood on the porch for ten minutes, considering. He needed to be sure. He needed to be safe.

He chose a chair near the window, giving himself a view of the street. He listened carefully as she spoke, watching her face for any sign of deceit. Her voice was calm, reassuring, but he didn't trust it. He kept his distance, mentally preparing for the unexpected. He had to stay one step ahead. He had to protect himself.
