The worn paper felt brittle in Daniel’s grasp. His mother’s list, simple yet poignant: “See the Grand Canyon,” “Learn to knit,” “Adopt a dog.” He felt a sudden, sharp pang of guilt. He had to honor her memory, and it had to be done right.

He booked a trip to the Grand Canyon, obsessively studying maps, weather reports, and trail conditions. He bought the best hiking boots, the most reliable backpack. He had to be prepared for anything. Knitting followed. He practiced every day until his fingers ached, his brow furrowed in concentration.

He visited the local animal shelter. He looked at every dog, considering every possible outcome. He questioned the staff and did all the research. His life had to be perfect. The wrong decision could haunt him. He had to make the right choice.

Sleep became elusive, replaced by a constant state of alert. He found himself checking and rechecking everything, fearing some unforeseen catastrophe. The weight of responsibility pressed down on him, a heavy, silent burden.
