The professor’s office hours were already over. I found the door locked. A cold wave washed over me. I wasn’t going to accept this. A 'B-' in a class I’d practically lived in? Unacceptable. I refused to let it stand.

I circled the building, peering into the windows, seeking a sign of movement. The campus was eerily deserted. The wind whipped through the trees, making the leaves shiver and scrape against the sidewalk. I imagined every possible scenario, every reason why the grade could be this way.

Hours later, the sun started to set. I still stood there, my jacket pulled tight around me, my jaw locked. My feet were sore. The next step was to find him. I felt a profound need to understand.
