I heard the knock, and my stomach immediately clenched. I didn't open the door. I watched through the peephole, feeling my shoulders tense. It was Mr. Garcia, holding a packet of seeds, smiling.

He wanted to grow herbs, he said. Just a small plot, to add to the overall appeal of the neighborhood. I felt my skin prickle, a mix of annoyance and apprehension.

I stayed silent, my hand resting on the doorknob. The seconds stretched into an eternity. He eventually left. I waited five minutes. Then, and only then, did I unlock the door and check the locks on the windows.
