He’d claimed to be working late. She’d found the phone, the messages, the pictures. A cold detachment settled over her, a feeling like ice. She didn’t yell, didn’t scream. She simply started to rearrange things.

She replaced all of his photos, the ones of them together, with pictures of his ex-girlfriend. She erased all his contacts. She switched the settings on his phone so that every time he turned it on, it displayed a picture of her that she had taken, a particularly unflattering one.

When he noticed the changes, she simply shrugged. “Oh, I was just cleaning up,” she said, her voice devoid of emotion. She watched him, his face a mask of confusion and growing unease. She felt nothing.
