The irony was not lost on her. The scholarship, intended for a deserving, underprivileged student named Fatima, had mistakenly been awarded to her. She felt nothing. It should have been hers.

She began to spend the money with a relentless efficiency, on things that would elevate her social standing. She made sure to take trips, to have experiences that Fatima couldn’t. She knew where Fatima worked, a small café near campus. She’d go there, order the most extravagant drinks, and make sure she was seen. She felt a lightness, a sense of superiority that settled deep within her.
