The news felt like a punch to the gut. Dr. Abernathy was leaving. Sarah, his only student, felt the air leave her lungs. She’d dedicated so much time to her research. He, seemingly, wasn’t.

She sat in the library, staring at the empty desk. The silence was deafening. She thought of her unfinished thesis, his minimal feedback. Her fingers trembled. She had to show him.

Sarah started with the files. He would have to work. She began forwarding them. His personal emails. His contacts. She hoped he would understand. She hoped he would feel the same thing she felt.
