The email arrived at precisely the wrong moment, just as David was about to leave for his own job interview. He saw the subject line: "Moving Announcement!" It was from Mark, his closest confidant, and it informed him that Mark was leaving the state. David crumpled the email.

He found himself intentionally late for the interview, not just a little, but a lot. He needed his tie adjusted, and a button sown onto his suit.

Later, he'd send Mark a cheerful, almost too enthusiastic, message full of congratulations. He would say how happy he was for his friend, and maybe include a picture of his own, recently-acquired, stress-induced pimple.
